Google TV Streamer Review 2026: the Chromecast successor with a network port

The Google TV Streamer is the successor to the Chromecast with Google TV and, for most people, the best box to watch IPTV on. It has the Google Play Store with TiviMate, a network port and enough memory for big channel lists.

Pricier in the US, not yet in Europe

Google raised the US price on 31 August 2026 from $99.99 to $149.99. A European price rise hasn't been announced.

Our verdict

Google TV Streamer: very good

The Google TV Streamer is the best all-rounder for IPTV: all the Android TV apps, including TiviMate, a built-in gigabit network port, 4 GB of RAM and every HDR format. Google promises security updates until at least September 2029. The chip is no powerhouse and the Wi-Fi stays at Wi-Fi 5, but you get a lot of box for the money.

  • 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, plenty for big TV guides
  • All HDR formats (Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG) and Dolby Atmos
  • Full Play Store with TiviMate, Smart IPTV and Kodi
  • Security updates until at least September 2029 and a button to find the remote

Cons

  • The MediaTek chip is slower than that of the Apple TV 4K and the SHIELD TV Pro
  • Only Wi-Fi 5
  • No HDMI cable in the box and no USB-A port
  • 50% pricier in the US; a rise in Europe can't be ruled out

Google announced the Streamer in August 2024 and it went on sale in September 2024. You get 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, gigabit Ethernet, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, plus a hub for Matter and Thread devices in your smart home.

In this review you'll read how IPTV works on the Streamer, what it does better than the Chromecast, where it falls short and how long it gets updates.

IPTV on the Streamer: all the apps and a network cable

Because the Streamer runs Google TV, you have the full Google Play Store. TiviMate, made for Android TV, is in there, as are Smart IPTV, GSE SMART IPTV PRO and Kodi. You add other apps as APKs with the Downloader app; that is also the route the makers of Smart IPTV describe for Google TV devices.

For IPTV, the built-in gigabit network port is the most important improvement over the Chromecast, which only had Wi-Fi. That matters, because the Streamer's Wi-Fi is Wi-Fi 5. For live channels in 4K you're best off using a cable.

With 4 GB of RAM and about 23 GB of free storage there is room for a big TV guide and several apps. Whether catch-up and a TV guide work does depend on your app and your subscription. A MAG portal with a MAC address doesn't work directly; for that you need an M3U link or Xtream Codes details.

Speed and everyday use

Google only calls the chip ‘improved’. According to Android Authority it is a MediaTek MT8696 with four cores up to 2.0 GHz, and Google says the CPU is 22% faster than the one in the Chromecast with Google TV. 9to5Google calls it not a particularly powerful processor. For streaming and IPTV it is fast enough, but the SHIELD TV Pro and Apple TV 4K are faster.

The Voice Remote also controls your TV, soundbar or receiver via IR, has buttons for YouTube and Netflix and a button you set yourself. If you lose it, press the button on the back of the Streamer or ask Google Assistant, and the remote beeps.

Google promises security updates until at least 24 September 2029. The latest version Google lists has security patches up to April 2026. An update to Android TV 16 is expected, but hasn't been confirmed for the Streamer.

Picture, sound and smart home

The Streamer plays 4K at 60 frames per second and supports all HDR formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. That gets you the best HDR picture on TVs from LG and Philips as well as on Samsung. For sound Google lists Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus; DTS isn't in the specifications.

The Streamer is also a hub for your smart home. It is a Matter controller and Thread border router, and with a Google Home panel on your TV you view cameras and control lights and the thermostat. According to Google, the casing is made of at least 65% recycled plastic.

Google TV Streamer or Chromecast with Google TV

The Chromecast with Google TV is no longer made: production stopped in August 2024 and the Google Store hasn't sold it since 20 February 2025. The Streamer has twice as much RAM (4 GB against 2 GB), four times as much storage (32 GB against 8 GB), a built-in gigabit network port, Thread and Matter and a button to find the remote. 9to5Google calls it a big upgrade.

The biggest difference in use: the Chromecast is a stick that disappears behind your TV, the Streamer a flat box that sits next to your TV. If you already have a Chromecast that works well, you don't need to switch straight away. If you're buying new, the Streamer is the logical choice.

Watching IPTV

IPTV on the Google TV Streamer

The Streamer runs Google TV with the full Google Play Store. You install TiviMate, Smart IPTV, GSE SMART IPTV PRO and Kodi straight from there; IPTV Smarters Pro, OTT Navigator and IBO Player weren't officially in the Play Store on 12 October 2026, so you add them as APKs with the Downloader app. MyTVOnline only works on Formuler boxes.

  • TiviMate
  • IPTV Smarters Pro
  • IBO Player
  • OTT Navigator
  • MyTVOnline 3
  • Kodi
  • MAG portal (MAC)

How to set up IPTV on the Google TV Streamer (TiviMate)

  1. Connect the Streamer to your TV with an HDMI cable; that cable isn't in the box. Plug a network cable into the Ethernet port and connect the USB-C power supply.
  2. Go through the setup on your TV and log in with your Google account.
  3. Search for TiviMate in the Google Play Store and install the app. Make sure you pick the real TiviMate and not an app with a similar name.
  4. Want an app that isn't in the Play Store, such as IPTV Smarters Pro? Install Downloader from the Play Store, allow it to install unknown apps in the settings and download the APK from the official website.
  5. Open TiviMate and choose ‘Add playlist’. Choose Xtream Codes if you also want to use the TV guide and catch-up, or an M3U link.
  6. Log in with the Xtream Codes details or the M3U link from your subscription. The TV guide then loads by itself.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Google TV Streamer

Is the Google TV Streamer better than the Chromecast with Google TV?

Yes. It has 4 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB, 32 GB of storage instead of 8 GB, a built-in gigabit network port, a hub for Thread and Matter and a button to find the remote. 9to5Google calls it a big upgrade, although the MediaTek chip is no powerhouse.

Can I install TiviMate on the Google TV Streamer?

Yes. TiviMate, Smart IPTV, GSE SMART IPTV PRO and Kodi are in the Google Play Store. You install other apps, such as IPTV Smarters Pro and OTT Navigator, as APKs with the Downloader app.

Does the Google TV Streamer have an Ethernet port?

Yes, a built-in gigabit port (10/100/1000 Mbit/s) alongside the HDMI 2.1 and USB-C connections. For IPTV that is handy, because the Wi-Fi is only Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac).

Will the Google TV Streamer get more expensive in the UK and Ireland?

That hasn't been announced. Google raised the US price on 31 August 2026 from $99.99 to $149.99, because of higher component costs. According to Android Planet, a European rise is possible.

How long does the Google TV Streamer get updates?

Google guarantees security updates until at least 24 September 2029. The latest version Google lists has security patches up to April 2026. An update to Android TV 16 is expected, but hasn't been confirmed yet.
