XCIPTV is a free Android player that does more than you'd expect: a TV guide, catch-up, recording to storage and films and series. The interface is simple and works well with a remote control. It only runs on Android, so not on Samsung, LG or Apple.

According to Google Play, the app has two built-in players (ExoPlayer and VLC), a TV guide for Xtream Codes, EZServer and M3U, catch-up, recording to internal or external storage and a backup so you can use your settings on several devices. Many IPTV providers supply their own version of XCIPTV, but the app on Google Play is the official one.

Recording with XCIPTV

XCIPTV can record to your device's internal storage or to a USB stick or drive. You schedule a recording from the TV guide, or set a reminder for a programme. Many other free apps don't offer recording at all.

Keep an eye on the storage on your Android TV: internal storage is often small, so a USB stick helps if you record a lot.

The official app or your provider's version?

XCIPTV is also sold as a branded version for IPTV providers, so you sometimes see apps that look the same under another name. The version on Google Play from OTTRUN is the official one.

The official app has no channels of its own: you log in with the details of your own subscription.

How to install XCIPTV on Android TV

Open Google Play on your device and search for "XCIPTV".
Install the app and open it.
Add your subscription: choose Xtream Codes (server, username and password) or an M3U link and enter the details from your IPTV provider.
Check that OTTRUN is the developer before you install, because branded copies exist.
Open the TV guide to watch catch-up or schedule a recording.
Wait for the channels and the TV guide to load; with a large playlist the first time takes a while.
